And why I don’t need a formula to deliver feedback!
This summer, I attended a communication training session in Suceava. During the discussion on giving feedback, the speaker suggested this rule: for every criticism, offer three appreciations.
While this approach might have its benefits, such as:
– boosting the confidence of the person giving feedback
– making the criticism sound less negative
As a manager, I’ve never felt the need to sugarcoat feedback or rely on formulas like this, or use the infamous “feedback sandwich” to deliver it effectively.
Don’t get me wrong, I love recognising and appreciating people’s work, and I make sure to do it on the spot when it happens. However for feedback, I prefer it direct and genuine, without wrapping it in layers of fluff.
For me, the foundation of delivering feedback is all about building trust and showing vulnerability. Also, these are some elements that I keep in mind:
① – ???? be positive and constructive
② – ???? clarify the opportunity of growth, connect the issue to their skills and responsibilities, and explain how addressing it aligns them with the job expectations
③ – ???????? focus on the behaviour, not the person
④ – ???????? leave personal attacks and hard feelings out of it, keep it polite and respect everyone in equal manner no matter how much they upset you
⑤ – ???????? be vulnerable, share your own experiences of making similar mistakes to create empathy and understanding
For me, this approach worked and effective feedback isn’t about rules or techniques, it’s about honesty, trust and a shared dedication to growth. ????
